Castalla

Castalla is set in picturesque mountain surroundings just 30 minutes inland from Alicante.
It is in a rural setting and has excellent views with greenery as far as the eye can see.
The town of Castalla is quaint and old with narrow streets and a traditional Spanish feel about it, and has a historic medieval castle at its highest point.
Castalla is very well serviced with the motorway to Alicante and to Madrid and its beaches and the airport via the new motorway A-36/ A-77. The nearest towns are Onil, Tibi, Ibi and Biar, all of them within ten kilometers

Also interesting is The Palacio de los Rico, next to the Ayuntamiento (city hall), the Hermitage de la Sang and the Moorish castle .

In Roman times the town was known as "Castra Alta" (the high fortress). During the Moorish occupation there was a fortified castle. King Jaime I took possession of the castle from the Moors after the conquest of Biar. He rebuilt the castle and consecrated the first church in the second half of the 13th century

In 1331, King Jaime II authorized Castalla to hold a Saturday market, a tradition which continues to this day.
